Hankison FLXA5.5-A-FP 550 SCFM Cycling Refrigerated Air Dryer with Filtration Package, 460V/3Ph - PN 7490751

Energy-efficient cycling refrigerated air dryer with phase change material technology, advanced controls, and an included prefilter and afterfilter package.

The Hankison FLXA5.5-A-FP Cycling Refrigerated Air Dryer is designed to remove moisture from industrial compressed air systems while reducing energy consumption during periods of lower air demand. Rated for 550 SCFM, this dryer helps protect pneumatic tools, controls, machinery, piping, and production equipment from corrosion and moisture-related damage.

The FLXA Series uses an advanced phase change material, or PCM, thermal reservoir to store cooling energy. Once the PCM has been sufficiently cooled, the refrigeration compressor and condenser fan cycle off while the stored cooling capacity continues drying the compressed air. The refrigeration system automatically restarts when additional cooling is required, allowing power consumption to closely follow actual compressed air demand.

This FLXA5.5-A-FP configuration includes the Hankison filtration package, consisting of an HF Grade 5 prefilter and an HF Grade 7 afterfilter for additional protection against oil aerosols and particulate contamination.

Key Features and Benefits

Energy-Saving Cycling Operation

The refrigeration compressor automatically cycles on and off based on compressed air demand. This reduces unnecessary compressor runtime compared with conventional non-cycling refrigerated dryers that operate continuously.

Phase Change Material Thermal Storage

The integrated PCM thermal reservoir stores and releases cooling energy while maintaining a stable pressure dew point. The PCM changes between liquid and solid states as compressed air demand changes.

550 SCFM Rated Capacity

Designed for larger industrial compressed air systems requiring reliable moisture removal at airflow rates up to 550 SCFM under standard rated conditions.

Included Filtration Package

The included prefilter and afterfilter help remove oil aerosols and solid particulate before and after the dryer, providing additional protection for the heat exchanger and downstream equipment.

Stable Pressure Dew Point

Delivers a nominal pressure dew point below 45°F for ISO 8573-1 Class 4-5 pressure dew point performance.

High-Pressure Capability

Rated for a maximum operating pressure of 232 PSIG, making it suitable for a wide range of industrial compressed air applications.

Advanced Monitoring and Controls

The backlit LCD controller provides operating information, energy-saving data, alarms, and communication capabilities for convenient system monitoring.

R-513A Refrigerant

Uses low-global-warming-potential R-513A refrigerant for dependable and environmentally responsible refrigeration performance.

How the Hankison FLXA5.5 Works

Warm, moisture-laden compressed air enters the dryer and passes through the air-to-air heat exchanger. The incoming air is partially cooled by the cold, dry compressed air leaving the dryer.

The compressed air then enters the chiller section, where it is cooled to its pressure dew point. Water and oil vapors condense into liquid and are removed by the integrated moisture separator and automatic condensate drain.

The cold, dry compressed air returns through the air-to-air heat exchanger, where it is reheated before leaving the dryer. Reheating the compressed air helps prevent condensation from forming on downstream piping.

The refrigeration circuit cools and solidifies the phase change material. Once the PCM has stored sufficient cooling energy, the refrigeration compressor and condenser fan cycle off. The PCM continues cooling the compressed air without consuming refrigeration compressor power. When the PCM has absorbed enough heat and returns to a liquid state, the refrigeration system automatically restarts.

Recommended Applications

The Hankison FLXA5.5-A-FP is suitable for compressed air systems serving:

  • Manufacturing facilities
  • CNC machines and machining centers
  • Metal fabrication operations
  • Automotive repair and body shops
  • Packaging equipment
  • Pneumatic production machinery

Rated Operating Conditions

The published 550 SCFM capacity is based on ISO 7183 Option A2 rating conditions:

  • 100°F compressed air inlet temperature
  • 100°F ambient temperature
  • 100 PSIG operating pressure

Actual dryer capacity will vary based on compressed air inlet temperature, ambient temperature, and operating pressure. Capacity correction factors should be applied when operating conditions differ from the published rating conditions.

Installation Considerations

The dryer should be installed in a clean, adequately ventilated location with sufficient clearance for airflow, maintenance, and service access.

Verify the following before installation:

  • Available electrical power is 460V, three-phase, 60 Hz
  • Compressed air flow does not exceed the corrected dryer capacity
  • Inlet air temperature remains within the dryer’s operating limits
  • Ambient temperature remains within the approved range
  • System pressure does not exceed 232 PSIG
  • Condensate is routed to an appropriate oil-water separator or approved disposal system
  • Adequate clearance is provided around the air-cooled condenser
  • The dryer is properly sized for actual operating conditions

Professional installation by a qualified compressed air equipment technician and licensed electrician is recommended.

Maintenance

Routine maintenance helps maintain dryer performance, air quality, and energy efficiency.

Recommended maintenance includes:

  • Inspecting the condensate drain for proper operation
  • Replacing prefilter and afterfilter elements at recommended intervals
  • Cleaning the air-cooled condenser
  • Checking airflow around the dryer
  • Monitoring the controller for alarms or fault messages
  • Inspecting compressed air connections for leaks
  • Purchasing the required annual maintenance kit to maintain extended warranty eligibility
